Liquid launches "Recess is Back" retail campaign for Keen.

Liquid was selected as the retail agency to bring Keen's "Recess is Back" brand campaign in stores across the country. As part of the assignment, we designed retail window displays and footwear merchandising solutions that showcased a variety of new offerings by Keen - a footwear company committed to designing products that allow their customers to play anyplace without a ceiling. In addition to the merchandising fixtures we also explored a variety of ways that the campaign could come to life through retail activation and consumer engagement activities. The resulting designs blended playground themes with youthful games, inviting consumers to do less number crunching and more puddle jumping.

The message of the "Recess is Back" campaign is about reconnecting with that playful spirit inside of each of us—taking small moments to really enjoy life and the fun that comes from spending time playing outdoors. While most of Keen's competitors focused on "performance" messages, the "Recess is Back" campaign connects to consumers in a way that is far less serious, and a lot more fun. We spent some time researching the visual language of school playgrounds, paying attention to the activities, materials and textures that would elicit those magical childhood moments, and built a set of storyboards to inspire our design directions.

Retail Window Displays.

We suggested building sets that used iconic school or park playground items to visually communicate the "Recess is Back" theme. We also specified a healthy dose of reclaimed materials, since this is an important part of the brand's value system. Additionally, the displays incorporated photography of people enjoying the great outdoors - suggesting the playful spirit and fun attitude represented by the Keen brand. The playground equipment also doubled as a display system since we used the exercise logs, monkey bars and other elements to showcase the new footwear.

Retail Merchandising Solutions.

The concept was extended to the merchandising solutions, with some of the playground equipment being repurposed into try-on benches. Additionally, we created a playground-style hopscotch game that allowed people to try the shoes on different surfaces - while reminding them of what it was like when recess was the best part of the day.
